DIY natural household cleaner

What do you get when you soak citrus peels in vinegar? A very potent natural household cleaner!

I have been dabbling with various DIY natural body and household products for a while now, making our home a healthier, less chemical-laden environment. Most of what I have tried involves just plain bicarbonate of soda or vinegar, so I have been itching to try something a little more involved.

Initially I came upon this recipe for homemade citrus enzyme cleaner, which sounds incredible but takes 3 months to prep! I will probably try it out for curiosity and science sake, but what do I do in the mean time? Thankfully someone posted this video on one of the Facebook DIY groups I belong to:

While this video demonstrates using the natural citrus cleaner for deep cleaning an oven along with bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), the citrus solution itself can be used for all household cleaning. The original article describes some of the uses for this incredible natural cleaner.

The recipe really is as simple as putting citrus peels in a jar, covering them with white spirit vinegar and letting them soak for 5 days. I used naartjie and grapefruit peels, but this would work with any citrus peels – how easy is that?!

This recipe came at the perfect time for me. This weekend I ran out of dishwasher rinse aid, which is not a biggie for me because I usually use vinegar when we run out. The citrus solution was right there so I just poured some into the rinse aid dispenser. I forgot to actually check the dishes to see if there was any difference, but I haven’t noticed any difference yet. Same thing, right?

Not only that but Mondays are laundry days in our household and I ran out of stain remover mid-load. So I just poured the citrus solution into the empty stain remover bottle and didn’t skip a beat. I’m excited to see the results!

Have you tried any natural household cleaning recipes or natural alternatives to traditional cleaning products? Feel free to tell me more or link to the recipes in the comments!

I LOVE THIS. I sometimes use vinegar to clean the shower – and my mom told me how to clean my kettle with vinegar. This one with the citrus – I’m sure the smell must make you want to clean. Thanks for the tip
